Philly Tweed ride

Oooh, I'd really like to bundle up and go on this Philadelphia Tweed Ride.

November 7, 2009

From the website:

Dapper attire is required.
We'd like to encourage you to pick up a bell for your handlebars if you don't already have one. Most of our fine local bicycle shoppes have them available for mere toppins. We'll be pedalling through some areas likely to be swarming with Yanks and tourists and it would be a razzle to send up a chorus of the ringy-dingy!

* I know I can't resist a chorus of the ringy-dingy! *

Weekend plans

This weekend marks Part II of the moving/painting/cleaning/(un)packing extravaganza. I'm looking forward to settling into the new house, cooking in my new kitchen, having some people over for Halloween before going to a few parties. Also, I can't wait to make and devour some pumpkin pie!

I dreamt of having a fantastic record collection the other night. I hate it when I have/purchase things only in my dreams. But it does inspire me to be an active collector.

Also, I neeeeed some of these Flora & Fauna posters. Lovely.

Have a good weekend!

xoxo

Ghosts VI, Sam Taylor-Wood (2008) via White Cube

this photo.

Sam Taylor-Wood first read Wuthering Heights only months before embarking on her series. One night while at her second-home in North Yorkshire, prior to her break-upwith gallery-owner Jay Jopling, she felt compelled to experience a novel she hoped to be “fantastically romantic.” After reading, Taylor-Wood felt it necessary to experience the wild landscape and the turbulent emotional weather that had inspired Brontë and so she set off on a trek across the moors with an assistant and camera equipment in the middle of February- a time of year Taylor-Wood described as prefect; “freezing cold.” Taylor-Wood and her assistant walked for hours in the unremitting sleet and winds. A moment of relief came when the pair finally reached Top Withins – the site of the action in Wuthering Heights – when the clouds parted and the sun appeared as captured in Ghosts IV.

The resulting photos are up now (but only for a few more days) at the Bronte Parsonage Museum in Yorkshire.  Wuthering Heights wasn't my favorite on my high school summer reading list, but Wood completely captures the epic scenery in her photos. Seeing them in the context of post-breakup adds a sense of futility to the hopeless romanticism.

Weekend plans

This weekend, I'm looking forward to being one step closer to moving into the new place up in Fishtown, buying paint, having just-moved-in takeout with my family and picking up some awesome furniture for the house! I was hoping to get a bulk of the furniture moving done tomorrow, but there may be a rain delay seeing as the forecast is a "70% chance that your moving plans will be fucked!" Thank you, meteorologist in my head, for keeping it real.

Have a good weekend!

Today I love...

Hawaii-printed US currency, used during WWII, when the government was afraid that Japan would soon takeover the islands.

I remember hearing stories from my grandmother about living in Honolulu right after Pearl Harbor. Curfews, blackout curtains, and gas-masks were everyday practices.

I love the font juxtaposition on the money, and the history behind it. Oh, if only I could find some of this money to frame. That would be so cool.

my new favorite soup

Pasta and Chickpea Soup
(recipe and photo courtesy of Chat & Chew)

It's super easy - such a hearty soup and great combination of veggies, pasta & beans that I would have never thought of! I especially love the softened Parmigiano-Reggiano rinds!

Pasta & Chickpea Soup

1/8 pound prosciutto or ham, thinly sliced
1 small red onion, peeled and cut into chunks
1 medium carrot, cut into chunks
1 stalk celery, cut into chunks
1 large clove garlic
1-1/2 teaspoons rosemary
1/4 cup olive oil
1 28-ounce can Italian plum tomatoes
2 15-ounce cans chickpeas, drained
4 cups chicken broth
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 bay leaf
1 4-inch square piece of Parmigiano-Reggiano rind (optional)
Salt and pepper
1 cup small pasta tubes (ditali)
1 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano

By hand or in a food processor, finely chop together prosciutto or ham, red onion, carrot, celery, and garlic. Set a 3 quart soup pot over medium heat and add olive oil. When oil is hot but not smoking, add the chopped mixture and cook 10 minutes until vegetables are softened.

Place tomatoes and their juice into a food processor and chop coarsely. Add to the sautéed vegetables along with the drained chickpeas, chicken broth, tomato paste, bay leaf and Parmigiano-Reggiano rind. Season with salt and pepper to taste and stir.

Bring the soup to a gentle simmer and cook for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove the softened Parmigiano-Reggiano rind, cut it into 1/4-inch cubes and return to soup (soup can be made ahead to this point).

Just before serving, add pasta and rosemary to simmering soup. When pasta is al dente, ladle soup into bowls and sprinkle generously with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve immediately.
